WHERE?
The Parthenon is situated in Athens, Greece. It is the largest building at the top of the Acropolis.

WHEN?
The Parthenon was built in the year of 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the height of its power. It was completed in 432 B.C. It took total nine years and represents the tangible and visible efflorescence of Athenian imperial power, unencumbered by the depredations of the Peloponnesian War. Likewise, it symbolizes the power and influence of the Athenian politician, Pericles, who championed its construction.

.................

WHO?
The great Parthenon was designed by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates. Another name that is mentioned is that of the sculptor Phidias, who also created the giant, 40 foot tall statue of Athena that stood inside. This statue was made of carved wood covered with gold and ivory.

HOW?
This monument was one of the biggest buildings of the world at it's time, standing 237 feet long, 110 feet wide and 68 feet deep.
The Parthenon is divided into 4 subjects, each subject is on a different side: west, north, east, south. Each subject depicts a war, on the west is the war between the Greeks and the Orientals also known as the Amazonomdchy. There are three main Metopes in the west side. On the north is the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. On the east side is the war between the gods and the Giants. Each Metope in this section is a statue of at least on god or giant. On the south side is the Centaurs and Laithes. Here all the Metopes are statues of the Centaurs fighting this big war.

.................
There are many columns in the Parthenon, these columns are called the Doric
columns. The height of these columns are 34 feet high.  Each column has a design of flutes, each column has exactly 20 flutes, not one more or one less, each of these flutes starts at the bottom and gets all the way up to the top. There are three types of columns, which are ionia, corthiam and dionian. Each of these columns have friezes, no two are exactly the same.

 WHY?
The word Parthenon means "Temple of the Virgin" and it was dedicated to Athena, goddess od wisdom, and patron of Athens. It was built to house a huge gold and ivory (chryselephantine) statue of the goddess, who was patron of the
polis of Athens. Some historians believe that Athens concluded a peace treaty with Persia in 449, two years before work began on the Parthenon. The building may be read as an expression of the confidence of the Athenians in this newly naked imperialism.

FUN FACTS:
1. During the process of building, people had to carry stones to build the Parthenon  from about 10 miles away.
2. The building had been stripped away over time, due to fires set by the Persians, Turkeys and Venetians over the centuries.
3. The actual idea of building the statue in the Parthenon came from the residents of Athens. They somehow got the idea that if victory had wings, it might fly away to some other city. Their solution was to clip the statue's wings, creating the 'Temple of Wingless Victory.'
